Tourist Traps In London |
Every city and society has it’s ‘bankers’ who masquerade as being credible and then line their pockets at their victims expense. Here are a some you might not want to bail out.
Introduction
When it comes to being ripped of some things are blatantly obvious others are more subtle. If you are asked to pay £10 for a pint of beer you can take it or leave it, but bad exchange rates and other charges applied to your bank account after you have made a transaction are less obvious.
Determining whether a facility or service is a rip off is actually more scientific than it might at first seem. Paying £10 for a pint of beer if you are an Arabian desert might be reasonable – Guinness for example is more expensive in Eastern Europe than London or Dublin. How ever that £10 pint is a rip off if it only costs £7 in a similar local environment.
Service charges such as transaction charges for changing foreign currency are more difficult to access. Some companies proudly boast ‘no commission charges’ but the reality of of doing business with them can be that you will come away with less currency than a company who has made a commission charge but offered you a better rate of exchange.
The admission prices into sights and attractions can range from a few pounds to £20 – £30. On the face of it a single adult ticket to a zoo at £20 may seem expensive if you and your partner are taking a two year old and the child goes free £40 for a family day out may not be as bad it first seems.
In London there are so many things to see and do it is possible to be very selective about how you spend your money. In the same way as the trip to the zoo would be pointless if the child does not like animals you need to determine whether you really want to visit somewhere or are going there simply to get the t-shirt. If it’s the latter you may feel you have been ripped off but if it’s something you really want to do you might consider it really great value.
Londonmost is currently looking at numerous nominations for our tourist traps list and given that our appraisal is quite fair and pragmatic you should be weary of any organization given a negative review on the list.
Equally as a result of these appraisals we have identified some organizations that offer a positive alternative to the rip off merchants which you might find helpful.
