Buckingham Palace H; R; (Summer only); Ind.

Buckingham Palace was first built in 1703 as a townhouse on land owned by the Duke of Buckingham when it bore the name Buckingham House. It was later bought by George 111 as a private home for Queen Charlotte and renamed the ‘Queen’s House. In 1837 it became the official London residence of the new Queen Victoria and has maintained this status for all subsequent British sovereigns including the present Queen. It is also the administrative headquarters of the Monarchy.

During the 19th century it’s size was extended significantly by the architects Edward Bore and John Nash until the former town house comprised of three wings around a court yard. . Further developments at the end of the century and the first part of the 20th century when the east facing wing was added.

The east wing includes the balcony on which members of the Royal family often appear before crowds assembled below. It is the public ‘face’ of Buckingham Palace and history. The last significant addition to the palace was in 1962 when the Queens Gallery was built on the site of palace’s private Chapel which had been destroyed by a bomb during the WW2.

Today the palace has a total of 775 rooms. This is made up of 19 State rooms, 92 offices, 52 bedrooms for the Royal family and their guests, 188 staff bedrooms, and 78 bathrooms. The State rooms are used for official business and entertaining visitors. There is also a ballroom built in 1856 which is often used for state banquets.

During the summer part of the palace the Queens Gallery is open to the public – Details. For further official information on Buckingham Palace please see this link.
