Built in 1995 this Hindu Temple. which is known locally as the Neasden Temple, is the first traditional Mandir in Europe. Inside the centre piece is the Haveli Prayer Hall which alone covers 2,500 sq metres, a sports halls and a medical centre. Though this the building is a contemporary construction it’s design incorporates many of the ancient Vedic principles of architecture amid art.
The temple’s distinctive smooth white stone pinnacles and accompanying domes are underpinned by complex marble pillars. These constructions were made out of 2,820 tonnes of Bulgarian limestone and 2,000 tonnes of Italian Carrara marble – all of which was were exported to India to be rendered by over 1,500 craftsmen.
When the works was finished over 26,000 carvings were shipped to London and assembled by hundreds of volunteers The end product of this three year project is an imposing Mandir who’s luminescent white pinnacles peacefully dominate the skyline..
Though the temple is primarily a place of prayer and sanctuary its promotes many cultural related aspects of Hinduism.in its activities and it;s exhibition ‘Understanding Hinduism.’ As a result it is also a recognized educational resource which aside of the faithful has been visited by around 9,000 school and other groups. It gives visitors an ‘insight’ into the fundamental values of Hinduism as well as some aspects of Indian culture.
The Mandir attracts visitors of all ages from all over the world including the former Archbishop of Canterbury, the late King Birendra of Nepal, The Prince of Wales and the late Princess Diana Spencer.
