Eating Out In London A Selection Of East European Restaurants
When we started compiling this guide to european restaurants in London and the Home Counties in SE England we hoped to encourage people to visit the 30 countries featured in the euromost.info guide to europe. It was also intended to give those that have already been to this part of the world an opportunity to taste the great range of cuisine once again. To an extent we have succeeded but we have come across a few restaurants who’s national dishes are not representative of good cuisine from the country they claim to represent so in true euromost style they are listed as well !

London Cafes Diners Pubs & Restaurants
There are thousands of places to eat out in London but working which ones offer quality and value for money is like picking winning lottery numbers. Most indigenous Londoners rely on recommendations from friends but if you are on a visit to london making the right choice is far more challenging especially as high prices (which are common place) do not necessarily reflect value for money.
Another issue that divorces London from other European, cities especially in central London, is that the continental ‘cafe society’ is for reasons like culture, planning regulations and weather in it’s infancy. Stopping off for a cappuccino or cold beer and a snack in London is far more difficult than in places like Budapest Paris Prague or Rome. This often means that if you do find somewhere in the main tourist areas the prices are absurd.
Not everybody who visits London is able to afford £8 per head for a cappuccino and a croissant midday or mid afternoon and those that can might not find the idea very riveting. exciting. Even fewer people want to spend to spend £15-20 per head on a formal lunch in the middle of a sightseeing trek.
Put bluntly visitors to London need to be at least a little streetwise when it comes to eating out. If you are staying at a hotel that supplies breakfast its a good idea to not to miss it. If you do your alternative options may depend on where you are. Outside central London in areas like Camden, Earls Court, Islington Shoreditch and beyond working man ‘cafes’ are usually a good and safe bet. A full english breakfast will cost around £4-£5. If your not sure where the nearest one to you is just ask a policeman street cleaner, staff at an underground station or taxis driver. Some pubs (bars) often offer breakfasts at similar prices. In the last resort most Macdonald’s offer breakfast though the hot chocolate is usually better than the tea.
Similar options apply to lunch but by 11am many more pub kitchens are open. The good thing with the pubs that sell food is that you do not usually have to have alcohol with your meal as they sell coffee and mineral drinks as well. Best value for money of the pub chains are Wetherspoons and O’neils who’s prices are only slightly higher than cafes. The former offers beers at very competitive prices whilst the latter has the edge on food quality. Another chain the ‘Slug and Lettuce’ offers good food but at somewhat higher prices. All three offer meals in the evening. Last orders for food vary between 9 – 10pm usually.
.Another chain worth mentioning are the ‘Cafe Rouge’ who are combined restaurant and bars. The ambience in these establishments is very relaxed, informal and quite European. They are child friendly and not frightened by wheelchairs. Both the service and food are excellent. The downside here is that the portions are sparing and the prices high – so probably a better investment in the evenings rather than the daytime.
Review A London Restaurant
There are numerous restaurants which offer dishes from Eastern Europe and they are not only found in the centre of London or trendy places like Upper Street N1. For example the Mozart Cafe in Highgate (see the ‘a taste of Austria’. Restaurants that offer East European dishes can be found all over London and the Home Counties in SE England. Euromost welcomes contributions from visitors who have eaten in these restaurants and would like to review them.
Contributions which reflect positively on the restaurant are preferred but the bad reviews will be also be considered! Please email reviews to post@londonmost.info
