Explanation Of Abbreviation Codes

You can find out useful visitors information about the museums (permanent exhibitions) and galleries listed alphabetically below by following the ‘details’ link in the column to the right of the name. Where possible this information includes a link to the establishment’s webisite.

Admission Prices: The details include information on the museum’s admission prices if entry is not free ( F) . Where admission charges apply there is indication on whether they are low (L under £3) medium (M between £3 – £6) or high ( H above £6). Visitor should note that admission charges may change

Opening Hours: These vary widely but places with the letter S are open at least five days a week and between 10am & 4pm or later.. In London major museums and galleries are usually open at the weekend. Establishments with the letter ‘R’ are open at restricted times and you will need to check the website for detail of these. Places with the letter B are only open on a ‘by appointment’ basis. Many of these place are academic and medical institutions it is essential that you make an appointment sometimes several days before your visit.

CO: Commercial Companies, Corporations and Guilds
EH: English Heritage
GLA: Greater London Authority
IND: Independent; Volunteers, Associations, Individuals and Charities/Trusts
LC: Local London Borough Council (including the City of London)
NT: National Trust
SO: State Owned (e.g. Non-Departmental Government Bodies)
