Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum H; S; Ind.

Opened four years ago, this museum has a modern ‘state of the art’ approach, whilst also displaying artifacts that have not been previously accessible.

Important Notes During the tournament the museum is only open to those holding tickets to tournament matches. However it is not open to anyone on the middle Sunday of the championships or the Monday after the finals. It is also closed on 24th 25th 25th December and January 1st. Snow Warning: Tours may be curtailed or cancelled during snowy weather.

Admission to the museum does not include the cost of a tour – but the cost of the a tour includes the admission to the museum!

Wimbledon Society Museum F; R; Ind.

This small independent museum covering three thousand years of Wimbledon history is run by a society of local history enthusiasts. The main body of the museum’s theme is the social history of the area which comprises of around 300 items mainly dated between 1850 and 1980. About 50% of these items are on permanent display at any time.

In addition to the permanent displays there also a collection of local artifacts. The museum also puts on special exhibitions dedicated to local theme or an individual who has been prominent in the local community. Though this is a very local and community orientated museum it’s curator is a trained industrial and social historian.

Wimbledon Windmill Museum L; R; Ind.

Wimbledon Common has much more than the Wombles to offer; and this museum is an 1817 windmill which was operational until 1864 when its machinery was taken out to make way for residential accommodation. In 1908 it was the setting in Robert Baden Powell wrote part of ‘Scouting for Boys’ for his scout movement.

The museum’s themes including local history, windmills and milling and some history on the Scout Movement. It is also possible for children to mill their own flour using a saddle stone, mortar, hand quern from grain provided. There is also a video room showing a continuous film detailing the principal design construction and operation found in English windmills.

The museum only open at the weekends from April to the end of October but group and educational visits can be arranged at other times throughout the year.

Women’s Library F; R; Ac.

This academic library covers political, social and other aspects of women’s lives -, mainly from a British perspective. The topics covered in the library’s collections include education, employment, the family, health, reproductive rights, sexuality and suffrage. Together the collections are designated by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council as being of ‘outstanding national and international importance.

The opening hours for the exhibitions are Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5.30pm though on Thursdays closing time is 8pm. On Saturdays the hours are 10am – 4pm. If you want to use the Reading Room you have to join the library. The Reading Room is open Tuesday to Fridays from 9.30 am to 5pm except on Thursday when it closes at 8pm.
