Hunterian Museum F; S; Ac.
A collection of some three and a half thousand body specimens, from the original collection of John Hunter (1728 – 1793), anatomist and surgeon and other collections which have been added since. Though obviously clinically sanitized some of the exhibitions within the museum would not not appeal to the the squeamish. The Odontological Collection of animal and human skulls, jaws, teeth (some extracted from soldiers killed at the Battle of Waterloo) and post cranial skeletal remains leaves little to the imagination.

The Museum’s origins are in the First World War (or as it was called at the time, the Great War), with the intention of preserving a national record of this event and its impact. Following the decision taken by the British Cabinet in 1917 to form such a record, its formal establishment in 1925, with input from the ‘Dominion’ governments, gave it the name Imperial War Museum .
It was housed in its permanent home at Lambeth Road in 1936. The building itself is part of the old Royal Bethlam Hospital – Bedlam as it was known, the remainder of which had been demolished in 1930 and is now the Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park (see below).
The Museum’s remit has been extended to include not only the Second World War, but all military operations involving Britain or the Commonwealth.
There is a permanent Holocaust exhibition – other exhibitions, (paying and non-paying) which change with varying frequency, currently include ‘From the War to Windrush’ (until March 2009), an exploration of the personal experiences of West Indian people during the two World Wars.

Inns of Court & City Yeomanry Museum F; B; Ind.
At Lincoln’s Inn, this small army museum traces the unusual history of the Regiment (the origins of which date back to 1594), of the Inns of Court and City Yeomanry whose original members were made up solely of lawyers enlisted primarily to defend London from any Spanish invasion. During their history they have fought in the English Civil War and the Boer War.
The museum is housed in a neo-classical Georgian building and has a range of uniform weapons and memorabilia on display. Viewing weekdays by appointment only.
