Getting To & From London Heathrow Airport By Public Transport
The airport is Zone 6 of the London public transport system
Rail Services To & From London Heathrow Airport
Getting to and from and from London Heathrow by train: The Piccadilly Line which is part of the London Underground Metro system’s connects the airport with Central London. The service stops at 15 stations before it reaches the heart of London and the journey takes about 45 -50 minutes.
As this line was built primarily as a commuter route, before the airport was built, the train carriages do not have designated facilities luggage. In the peak hours these trains are very overcrowded and in central London it is not always possible to board them and because of the congestion in the train and on the platforms it can be difficult getting off them. Visitors to London should be aware of these facts particularly if they are travelling outward from Central London at peak times when they should allow extra time for the journey.
The Piccadilly line connects with northbound suburban and intercity to the north and Scotland services at Kings Cross which is also the interchange station for the Eurostar International Services from St Pancras. Passengers for Thameslink services to London Luton Airport should also change at Kings Cross. Thameslink services from there also serve Gatwick. see the paragraph in red below as this is a long journey.
Heathrow passengers travelling to the Midlands, Northwest England and Scotland from Euston ( on the Victoria Line) should change at Kings Cross. Passengers for East London London Stansted Airport and East Anglia should take the Piccadilly line to South Kensington and change on to the Circle Line and get off at Liverpool Street.
Passengers travelling between Heathrow and London City Airport should travel on the Piccadilly Line to South Kensington and then on to Bank / Monument Station where they can get the Docklands Light Railway to the airport.
Heathrow passengers travelling to the West Country, Devon and Cornwall via Paddington should take the Piccadilly Line to Kings Cross and then the Hammersmith and City Line to Paddington – see also the Heathrow Express (below) which is direct.
Travel from London Heathrow Airport to London Gatwick Airport : – passengers can change from the Piccadilly Line at South Kensington and take the Circle Line to Victoria. At Victoria they can take mainline suburban rail services to Gatwick or the Gatwick Express. However as the entire journey between the two airports can take more than two hours the National Express Coach Services (see below) are a more practical option.
The Heathrow Express is a frequent 20 minute service from London Heathrow Airport to Paddington Station in Central London. It is by far the quickest way from London Heathrow Airport to Central London. Paddington Mainline Station connects with London Underground Services – the Circle Line, the District Line and the Hammersmith & City Line.
However passengers with heavy luggage should note that on arrival at Paddington that it may be advisable complete for them to complete their journey to their destination by Taxis. This is because access to the London Underground services is difficult as the station layout is complex and fragmented and involves walkways and stairs in some areas.
Bus Services To & From London Heathrow Airport
There are numerous local bus services serving the airport: Worth noting is the night bus the N9 which operates every night from the airport to west and central London. The service is generally every 20 minutes and takes about up to an an hour and 20 minutes.
Coach Services To & From London Heathrow Airport
Several companies operate services to and from Heathrow Airport but the major company is the National Express Coach Service which operates frequent direct services to Victoria Coach Station in Central London and literally hundreds of other destinations across Britain either directly or through it’s network. Passenger with heavy luggage should note that it is a ten minute walk from Victoria Coach Station to Victoria Mainline and Underground Station.
National Express provide a direct service between Heathrow and London Gatwick Airport which is the easiest way of travelling between these two airports.
Taxis To & From London Heathrow Airport
There are licensed London Taxis outside all terminals at Heathrow Airport

Terminal 2 is closed until 2014 as it is being rebuilt. Terminals 1 & 3 offer all the facilities you would expect to find at a major international airport. Terminal 4 has recently undergone a major refurbishment and the facilities and ambience here is very good. Terminal 5 is one of the most modern and comfortable airports in the world with exceptional range of facilities especially for business travellers.
All the terminals at Heathrow offer a wide range of the most well known high street shops, restaurants, exchange bureaus ATM cash machines and duty free outlets. There are baby changing facilities in all terminal both before and after the security checks.
London Heathrow Airport Special Needs Facilities
There are uni-sex toilets suitable for the disabled in all terminals and there is a ‘Help Bus’ available for disabled people who need to travel between terminals and or the central bus station. There are also special facilities for the hard of hearing and partially sighted. Details of these facilities are given here. We have not been able to identify any specific policy for wheelchair users and thought the advice for disabled before they leave home though well meant was somewhat patronising more.
