UK Airport & Rail Security Threat Level Raised To ‘Severe’

6th Jan 2010 Increased security measures have been introduced at airports and major railway stations im the UK following advice from secirity security services that the previous ‘substantial’ terrorist threat in these areas is now regarded as ‘severe’. This level is one level below the highest defined threat level ‘critical’ which would be announced if an attack was thought to be imiment..

As a result of the increased threat level armed police and anti-terrorist officers will be more visible at transport hubs particularly in London and the Home counties. In London these measures l include the London Underground.

Security sources say there is no intelligence of an imminent attack but .concerns remain about concerns the possibility of Mumbai-style gun attacks in the UK and Europe rather than an attack on an aircraft -. in the UK generally the threat has been ‘severe’.’.since January 2010 and these precautionary measures bring security on public transport up to a similiar level and remind people of the need to be vigilant.

UK Government (Home Office) Definitions Of Terrorist Threat Levels

1:Critical attack expected imminently .2:Severe attack highly likely..3:Substarial attack a strong possibility. 4: Moderate attack possible but not likely.. 5: Low – an attack unlikely

Which Airport ? – Assuming You Have A Choice !

There are five airports that serve London though only one of them London City actually has a London postcode. Of the other four only London Heathrow is geographically close to London. However, distance aside, time wise travelling to central London on public transport the from the remaining airports London Gatwick, London Luton and London Stansted there is very little difference.

Theoretically the quickest journey time from any designated London airport is from London Heathrow to Paddington on the Heathrow Express. The downside here is that Paddington station is quite a difficult station to navigate and particularly with heavy luggage if you are planning to travel on the underground. The navigation for visitors is not made any easier by the fact that some London Underground maps actually show two Paddington Stations!

A similar situation exists if you are commuting from London City on the Docklands Light Railway to the London Underground interchange at Bank / Monument. This station was originally two stations which now form one station with two entrances! The difficulty here is that the distance between the different platforms is quite long especially if you have luggage

The luggage problem is not so evident at interchange stations that you would use travelling from Gatwick Luton or Stansted none of which are close to London. Of the three the interchange at St Pancras where trains from Luton Airport terminate is marginally more comfortable. It also offers more options for onward travel than the interchange stations at Liverpool Street and Victoria which serve Stansted and Gatwick respectively.

The guides for each London Airport also detail coach services from each airport which though they take longer are distinctly cheaper and more practical for those carrying luggage. That said if you are travelling to Victoria Coach Station be aware that it is a ten minute walk to Victoria Underground station.
